Julia runs City & Guilds courses with Tracy A. Franklin through their joint venture All of the City & Guilds courses are taught in Studios 2 and 3 in Fowler’s Yard, Durham, and are also available by distance learning.

The courses currently on offer are listed below:

7822-05 – level 2    Certificate in Stitched Textiles (Embroidery)
A one year foundation and introductory course for those with some experience or knowledge.  Five design units are studied and link to hand and machine stitch techniques in traditional and contemporary ways.   There are 10 samples, 2 projects, back-up work and a course portfolio to present for assessment.

7922-08 – level 3    Certificate in Stitched Textiles (Embroidery)
During this two year course, students will explore the five design elements and learn creative design techniques.  Embroidery techniques in decoration, manipulation, construction and stitch by hand and machine - in traditional and contemporary ways – will be studied in depth.  There are 4 projects and 3 experimental pieces with back-up work, a course portfolio, 5 design topics and hand and machine embroidery samples to present for assessment.

7922-17 – level 3    Certificate in Stitched Textiles (Machine embroidery)
On this  structured, two year course, in machine embroidery, students will explore techniques and methods to build up a comprehensive portfolio of work linked to the five design elements. There are 4 projects and 3 experimental pieces with back-up work, a course portfolio, 5 design topics and machine embroidery samples to present for assessment.

7923-12 – level 3    Diploma in Stitched Textiles (Embroidery)
This two year course offers further study in both hand and machine embroidery in contemporary and historical contexts.  Students develop their own design work based on a research project of their own choice, and study foreign embroidery techniques.  There is a design research project, an illustrated study, constructed samples, a portfolio of advanced techniques and 4 projects to present for assessment.
