Julia has a series of lectures and day schools that she presents to guilds, groups and organisations who are interested in her textiles, teaching, and travelling experiences.
Lectures and day schools can be adapted for all ages, and can be independent of each other.

Indian Influences
From historical textiles to geometric patterns in Banjara work, Julia explains the techniques and styles of Indian embroidery through a colourful and informative slide show. Textiles will be brought along for you to try on and handle. The dayschool explores appliqué and Indian embroidery stitches and techniques.

Peruvian Embroidery
Textiles of the Andes are brought alive in this lecture where ancient designs are shown alongside modern. The development of textiles in Peru through the ages is explored through reclaimed traditions and folklore, contextualised in graphic slides! Textiles will be brought along for you to try on and handle. The dayschool explores working with Peruvian patterns, print and stitch.

Mexican Textiles
Costume varies dramatically from region to region in Mexico, and Julia shows examples of how colours, patterns and textures change from village to village, and how traditions of image are still strongly influenced by ancient Aztec beliefs. Textiles will be brought along for you to try on and handle. The dayschool explores the design and stitching of Mexican motifs.

Fabric Manipulation
Ideas for ways of shaping and manipulating fabric are explored in this lecture, by looking at sources of inspiration all around us, and seeing how we can interpret them. Samples of work will be brought along to illustrate the lecture. The dayschool explores a variety of surface manipulation techniques by hand and machine.

Colour
Julia is passionate about colour! It’s often the main focus of her textile art, and in this lecture Julia shows how and why it influences her and how she teaches this subject. Vibrant slides show samples of Julia’s, and her students’, design and textile work, illustrating this passion. Mouth-watering sketchbooks will be brought along to make you drool! The dayschool explores colour design work for stitch.

My Work
Julia’s textile art is quirky, rich and varied and conveys influences from her travels and observations and interpretations from her everyday surroundings. This lecture gives an insight into the development stages and processes of Julia’s work, and investigates why she does what she does! Samples of work will be brought along to illustrate Julia’s style.
